Information About

Wimbledon Station

Wimbledon station is a National Rail , London Underground , and Tramlink station located in Wimbledon in the London Borough Of Merton .

The station is currently served by the London Underground District Line and National Rail operators South West Trains , First Capital Connect , Southern and also Tramlink Route 1. The station is in Travelcard Zone 3 . Adjacent to the station is Wimbledon's Centre Court Shopping Centre.

From Wimbledon services to Central London , west London, the City and Midlands can be obtained traveling northbound while southbound trains provide services to the south west and Sutton .

There used to be a railway line from Wimbledon to West Croydon ; this line is now used by Tramlink . In the past this station was also able to provide services to Tooting Junction Railway Station via Merton Abbey Railway Station , another way to get into the City. Part of the Tramlink line follows the course of the world's first public railway to be given parliamentary approval. A bill for the Surrey Iron Railway , which ran near Mitcham, was presented to parliament on 27 February 1801 , received Royal Assent on 21 May 1801 and began service on 26 July 1803 .

If or when Crossrail Line 2 is built, one of the route options involves taking over the Wimbledon branch of the District Line as far as Parsons Green , and routing trains via Chelsea and central London to Hackney and on to Leytonstone Tube Station and beyond. This would provide another set of transport links for the area.

The typical off-peak service frequency is:

  • 16tph (trains per hour) to Waterloo (South West Trains)

  • 6tph to Upminster via Tower Hill (District Line)

  • 6tph to Edgware Road via High Street Kensington (District Line)

  • 2tph to Luton (First Capital Connect)
