William Leefe Robinson ( July 14 , 1895 – December 31 , 1918 ) was an English recipient of the Victoria Cross , the highest and most prestigious award for gallantry in the face of the enemy that can be awarded to British and Commonwealth forces. He was twenty one years old, and a Lieutenant in No. 39 Squadron RFC and The Worcestershire Regiment during the First World War , when the following deed took place for which he was awarded the VC. On the night of 2/3 September 1916 over Cuffley , Hertfordshire , Lieutenant Robinson, flying a Royal Aircraft Factory BE.2 , sighted a German airship – one of 16 which had left bases in Germany on a mass raid over England. The lieutenant made an attack at a height of 11,500ft approaching from below and, closing to within 500ft, raked the aircraft (the wooden-framed Schütte-Lanz SL11) with gunfire. As he was preparing for another attack, the airship burst into flames and crashed in a field. He is buried at All Saints' Churchyard Extension, Harrow Weald , Middlesex , England (S.E. Section). He is commemorated still by the name of the local Beefeater restaurant just south of the cemetery. SEE ALSO
