William Ivey Long




The son of Winthrop University professor, and stage director, William Ivey Long, Sr, and his wife Mary, who taught high school theatre for eighteen years, William Ivey Long, Jr. grew up in Rock Hill, South Carolina . He graduated from the College Of William And Mary then taught at the University Of North Carolina At Chapel Hill while pursing a PhD in art history. He left the PhD program there to pursue a degree in design at the Yale School Of Drama . He graduated in 1975, and initially worked for couturier Charles James in New York City . His first Broadway production was '' The Inspector General '' in 1978.

He has been nominated for ten Tony Award s, winning four (for '' The Producers '', '' Hairspray '', ' Crazy For You '', and ' Hairspray ''). He won the Drama Desk Award for outstanding costume design for ''Hairspray'', ''The Producers'', ''Guys and Dolls'', ''Lend Me a Tenor'', and ''Nine''.

His reputation is as a stickler for details and a work-a-holic. He has a staff of five, fourteen houses, and no boyfriend.
