The arboretum began in 1915 when the college, at that time called the Allentown College for Women, moved to its current location. The site was then a cornfield with a single black Walnut tree, but was gradually improved with the planting of trees, shrubs, and flowering bushes. Although that original black walnut was destroyed in a violent storm on August 11 , 1983 , the arboretum now contains more than 135 varieties of trees and shrubs. SEE ALSO |
