He studied physics, architecture and filmmaking at the University Of California, Berkeley , where he was influenced by the work of Antoni Gaudi . Vinton pioneered the use of Plasticene clay to create characters for Stop-motion Animation . After winning the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 1975 (for ''CLOSED MONDAYS'', co-created with Bob Gardiner ), he coined and copyrighted the term, Claymation , to describe his process. He established Will Vinton Productions (later Will Vinton Studios ) in Portland to capitalize on this technology, primarily producing commercials. Prominent among his creations were the California Raisins , the Domino's Noid , and M&Ms Red and Yellow. Vinton Studios also continued to produce short films for the festival circuit, four of which were nominated for Academy Awards. Their first big hit were the California Raisins who sang '' I Heard It Through The Grapevine '' in their various ad spots for the California Raisin Advisory Board . They became such a media phenomenon that they went on to star in their own Primetime specials for television, ''Meet the Raisins'' ( CBS Prime-time Special, 1988) and ''The Raisins Sold Out'' (CBS Prime-time Special, 1990). Vinton Studios also produced the animated series '' The PJs ''. The series was conceived by Eddie Murphy , who voiced many of the roles. Vinton was also responsible for "Will Vinton's Claymation Comedy of Horrors", "Will Vinton's Claymation Easter" and "Will Vinton's Claymation Christmas Celebration ." In 2002, Will Vinton lost control of the studio he founded after Phil Knight , the founder of Nike , became the majority shareholder and Vinton was fired. Vinton later sought damages for this and sued for ownership of his name. In 2005 Will Vinton Studios was renamed Laika Entertainment House . Vinton has since founded a new production studio, Freewill Entertainment, also based in Portland. EXTERNAL LINKS
