Wide Sargasso Sea

The novel is set a short while after the Emancipation of the slaves in British-owned Jamaica, and Rhys concerns herself with rewriting the character Bertha (named Antoinette by Rhys) from Charlotte Brontë 's Victorian novel '' Jane Eyre ''. Rhys attempts to portray Antoinette's descent into madness while presenting possible causes for her madness: namely, Rochester's influence. This is a drastic change from the original text by Charlotte Brontë. The narrator initially is Antoinette and then switches to Rochester, then alternates between them. Grace Poole, another character from Bronte's novel, also narrates. The novel takes place mostly in the Jamaica, but ends in England. Rhys moves the time of events to the late 1830s to coincide with emancipation.

Some label this text as Postmodern due to its evident preoccupation with rewriting the Victorian age.

A film adaption directed by John Duigan was released in 1993 starring Karina Lombard and Nathaniel Parker
