Opened by the Manchester, Buxton, Matlock And Midlands Junction Railway in 1849 , though it wasn't listed in the timetable until 1853 . The first station was "Watstandwell Bridge" ''(sic)'' north of the 149 Yard Whatstandwell Tunnel, behind the Derwent Hotel. The original platform still exists, though the area was used as a goods yard when the present station was opened in 1894 . It then became "Whatstandwell". A little way north was High Peak Junction at the base of the former rope-worked incline of the Cromford And High Peak Railway . The station is served by Central Trains , who operated local services from Derby to Matlock. Services are formed using Diesel Multiple Unit s of Classes 150 , 153 , 156 , 158 or 170 .
