West Ruislip is a London Underground and National Rail station in Ruislip in west London . It is in Travelcard Zone 6 . The station is the western terminus of the Central Line 's West Ruislip branch, with Ruislip Gardens as the next station towards London. The other branch is the Ealing Broadway branch. The National Rail Platforms are served by Chiltern Railways trains from Marylebone towards High Wycombe and Birmingham Snow Hill . The station is situated between Denham and South Ruislip stations. Not all trains stop at all stations, so travellers are recommended to consult a timetable before travelling. West Ruislip station is aligned east-west; the station buildings are on the road overbridge across the lines at the western end of the station. Southernmost in the station area is the non-electrified connecting track leading from Ruislip LUL depot east of the station, to the shunting neck linked to the National Rail network to the west of the station. Next is a LUL electrified siding, then the Central Line platforms; these are arranged as an island, with tracks on either side. Ruislip depot handles many empty stock movements into and out of the station as trains come into and out of service. The next station towards London is Ruislip Gardens . The Central Line's platform tracks extend past the platforms and under the road bridge to buffer stops a short distance westwards. This is a legacy of the original design proposals, which as part of the 1935-40 New Works plan saw Central Line services extending from North Acton junction westwards to Denham . However, the post-war passing of the Town and Country Planning acts blocked the continuation of the inter-war speculative housing development which the extension to Denham would have served, and the extension was cut back to West Ruislip. Its legacy can still be seen in the very wide formation west of the road overbridge, where the width of the fenced land between the existing running lines and the gardens of the adjacent houses to the south of the line indicates where the extension would have run. The platforms for the National Rail tracks lie to the north of the northernmost Central Line track. These are side-platforms on each side of the National Rail formation, with the westbound National Rail platform backing onto the eastbound Central Line track. The original layout had two through roads and two platform roads, but simplification of the layout when the old manual signal box closed removed the westbound platform road and widened the westbound platform. Only the eastbound services into Marylebone now have a through and a platform road. The eastbound platform road leaves the through line just west of the station and rejoins it a few hundred yards to the east, although formerly it extended as far as South Ruislip Station . Chiltern Railways have indicated that four roads may be restored at some time in the future. All platforms are accessible from the station building on the overbridge, whilst the National Rail eastbound platform also has its own station building and access to the station car park on the north side of the station. The shunting neck on the south side of the National Rail line west of the road overbridge, gives access to the connecting track to Ruislip depot. This is used for the delivery and removal of London Underground rolling stock and materials (mainly ballast). On the north side of the National Rail line at the same location are two sidings, at present used only for the occasional ballast or works train. For a period some years ago, a shuttle service to Marylebone used these sidings as a stabling point; this service has ceased, and all trains now run through. Immediately to the east of the station, both Central Line and National Rail tracks pass over the Uxbridge Branch of London Underground's Metropolitan and Piccadilly Lines. Although there is a non-revenue connection for stock movement from Ruislip depot to this branch, there is no connection for passengers or passenger trains. The nearest stations on the Uxbridge branch are Ruislip or Ickenham , both some 1km away from West Ruislip station. The station's original name was "West Ruislip (for Ickenham)", but was truncated in the 1980s. Some Central Line stations still show the longer name on the line diagrams on their platforms. Adjacent to the station is RAF West Ruislip which has a co-located US Navy facility and elementary school. Former site of a US Air Force facility. |
