Werner Arber




He was born in Gränichen in the canton of Aargau . He attended public schools and the Swiss Polytechnical School in Zürich . He first started in basic research in isolation of a new isomer of chlorine with a very short half-life.

In the summer of 1958 , he went to the University Of Southern California . After spending time at several U.S. laboratories, he returned to Geneva . He then moved to the University Of Basel .

He then went as an assistant to the Biophysics Laboratory at the University Of Geneva . There, he worked on bacterophage research and wrote his dissertation on defective lambda prophage mutants.

He received the Nobel Prize In Physiology Or Medicine in 1978 for discovering Restriction Enzyme s.

He is married and has two daughters.
