Weber Cup

The Weber Cup, named after bowling legend Dick Weber , is the Ten-pin Bowling equivalent of Golf s Ryder Cup . It is commonly referred to as ''"Ten-pin’s high octane version of the Ryder Cup"'' or ''"Ten-pin bowling's answer to golf's Ryder Cup"''. It consists of two teams, Team Europe and Team USA doing battle over three days in a series of singles, doubles and team matches.

The event is televised by Matchroom Sport Television and will be subsequently broadcast as 15 x 1 hour programmes both at home on Sky Sports and around the world.

HISTORY / BACKGROUND

The Weber Cup is the annual Europe vs USA ten-pin bowling championships and is regularly broadcast live from start to finish on Sky Sports in the UK any many other international channels aroudn the world. It takes place in November every year. It is the biggest annual Bowling event in the world. Second to it are the World Tenpin Masters and the AMF World Cup .

Styled on golf’s Ryder Cup, the Weber Cup features two five man teams representing Europe and the USA doing battle over three days in a series of singles, doubles and team matches.

35 matches are played. Each match is worth 1 point. The first team to 18 points wins the tournament.

Since the year 2000 , when the event was inaugurated in Warsaw , Poland , the Weber Cup has always been aired as up to 18 one-hour highlight programmes in Britain, as well as on various stations around the world.

All matches will be played in a single lane arena, which has been specially constructed for the event. With banked spectators on both sides, the Weber Cup represents tenpin’s most intimidating venue.

Television production will be handled by Sky Sports who will be sure to come up with some new innovative ideas as they prepare for their first ever tenpin show.
After last year’s triumph, Euro skipper Tomas Leandersson is in no mood to relinquish the trophy, “Last year was a phenomenal performance from the team and after a few years of being second best to the Americans, the boot is now on the other foot.
“We must not be complacent as we know what they are capable of when they’re on form. I’m confident though that Jens and Paul will perform at their best and if we play like a team and work hard from start to finish, then I’m confident that we can hold onto the trophy.
“Both times we have won, the crowd have played a massive part in our success and if they get behind us again this year, then it will be worth a few pins to us in every game.”
Tickets for the event are FREE and available at info@matchroom.com, 01277 359912, the Barnsley Metrodome and from Alan Bennett on 0114 2680188.

Today 2006

The 2006 Weber Cup event will take place at the Barnsley Metrodome in England, UK.

In 2006 team captains Tomas Leandersson of Europe and Tim Mack of Team USA will be under the added pressure of a huge live television audience as well as 600-strong crowds when the event takes place at the Barnsley Metrodome from 11 to 13 November 2006 or October 20 - 22.

Although the rivalry is always friendly, the score now stands at three games to two in favour of the Americans as this transatlantic ten-pin tussle enters its sixth year.

In fact, after walking away with the first three years of the Weber Cup, Team USA suffered two massive reverses when the event moved north to Altrincham in Manchester .

2005

In 2005, the Europeans compounded the misery as they cruised to victory by a huge seven- point margin, equalling the biggest winning margin in the tournament’s short history.

2004

The big question is whether Team America can regroup following last year’s drubbing. Skipper Tim Mack makes just one change to his side in bringing in himself over David Haynes but there are big question marks over Mack’s fitness as he struggles to recover from surgery on his troublesome shoulder.

The team of Bill Hoffman, Tony Manna, Dino Castillo and Mike Mullin accompany him

Tomas Leandersson keeps the same wimming side as in 2003 with Gery Verbruggen, Tore Torgerson and Phil Scammell.
The team is completed by a Scandinavian giant of European bowling - Finland's Lasse Lintila (Finland).

2003

In 2003 , missing their inspirational captain Tim Mack and up against some vociferous northern support, Team USA were never in contention as the Europeans went into the lead early on day one and never relinquished it.

After three barren years of total United States domination, Team Europe finally overcame the odds in November 2003 to lift the hallowed Weber Cup for the first time. It was a total triumph for captain Tomas Leandersson, who led from the front for all three days, putting in a sterling performance that saw his side over the line.
