The Baltimore-Washington metropolitan area is the Metropolitan Area consisting of Washington, D.C. , Baltimore, Maryland , Northern Virginia , Central Maryland , and two counties in the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia . It is the fourth largest metropolitan area in the U.S. after New York , Los Angeles , and Chicago .

Officially, the area is designated the Washington-Baltimore, DC-MD-VA-WV Combined Statistical Area (CSA). The CSA includes the Baltimore Metropolitan Statistical Area the Hagerstown, MD MSA and the Washington-Arlington-Alexandria, DC-VA-MD-WV MSA . Some counties and cities are not officially designated by the Census Bureau as members of this metropolitan area, but still consider themselves members anyway. This is mostly due to their proximity to the area, the size of their commuter population, and by the influence of local broadcasting stations. The population of the entire Baltimore-Washington Metroplex as of 2000 is 7.6 million, up from 6.7 million in 1990. The estimated populaton of the Baltimore-Washington area as of 2005 is about 8 million.
