HISTORY

Disney's video division was established by of 1980 on Beta and VHS ; they included '' The Apple Dumpling Gang '', '' 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea '', '' Mary Poppins '', '' The Black Hole '', '' The Love Bug '', '' Davy Crockett, King Of The Wild Frontier '', '' Davy Crockett And The River Pirates '', '' Escape To Witch Mountain ''. They retailed for $99.99.

In 1981 , more titles followed- The One And Only, Genuine, Original Family Band , The North Avenue Irregulars , A Dream Called Walt Disney World , The Watcher In The Woods and so forth. But in July of 1985 , the line scored a hit with the home video premiere of Pinocchio , which became the bestselling video in 1985.

Before Disney began releasing videocassettes itself, it licensed some Disney animated shorts compilations and TV Programs for release on Laserdisc by Discovision . The first titles were released December 16 , 1978 , including '' On Vacation With Mickey Mouse And Friends ''.

The first of the Disney Animated Features Canon to be released on video was '' Dumbo '' in June of 1981 , for rental only. After that, '' The Many Adventures Of Winnie The Pooh '' in mid- 1981 . '' Alice In Wonderland '' was released in October of 1981 , also for rental only; both titles were made available for sale in 1982 . The next major animated feature to be released (excluding the "package" anthology features) was '' Robin Hood '' in late 1984 .

Disney's first cartoon compilations (pre- Walt Disney Cartoon Classics in 1983) appeared in 1981 , these included '' Goofy Over Sports'', ''On Vacation with Mickey Mouse and Friends'', ''A Tale of Two Critters'', ''The Adventures of Chip N' Dale '', and a few others.
