WVUA was chartered in 1981, and in its twenty-five years has changed its name a few times. It was once referred to as "V-91," but it currently operates under the name "New Rock 90.7." Under the leadership of its current station manager the station is preparing to change its name to "The Capstone 90.7." The Capstone is an affectionate nickname for the University Of Alabama . Some suggeest that the "VUA" in the station's call letters is intended to suggest "the Voice of the University of Alabama," which is a tagline the station often uses. 90.7 also uses the tagline "The Capstone Sports Authority." Its sports staff has the opportunity to broadcast virtually every UA sporting event, with the exception of football. WVUA broadcasts baseball, men's and women's basketball, and volleyball among other sports. It is the exclusive radio home for Alabama Softball and Alabama Gymnastics. During the day, the station is mostly dedicated to its format of "new rock," but the formatting often varies at night. Regular, or "playlist" dj's often have little choice in what music they play because they are usually new to the radio station. Night shifts are given to "specialty" dj's who have more liberty in making their music selections than playlist dj's. Specialty shows have been known to be dedicated to one specific genre of music such as soul, folk, or Jamaican dance. A sample of WVUA's specialty shows: Hot Buttered Soul -- a show featuring classic soul music which airs Mondays from 10-12 P.M. Folk Yourself -- a show featuring folk music which airs Sundays from 6-8 P.M. Rock And Jock -- a "hybrid" show which is a fusion of a music show and a sports talk show, featuring rock music and sports talk from J.J. Roper , Brian Vesely , and Ben Foster , members of the WVUA Sports Staff WVUA can be heard through internet broadcasts by visiting the station website, New Rock 90.7 . WVUA is entirely student-run with its leaderships coming from the Board of Directors. All members of the Board of Directors are students enrolled at the University Of Alabama . Positions on the Board of Directors include Station Manager, Program Director, Business Manager, Music Director, Sports Director, Promotions Director, Production Director, and the newly-recreated position of News Director. Although WVUA is student-run, it is maintained by the Office Of Student Media , which is also the parent organization of Bama's campus newspaper, The Crimson White . WVUA is located in Reese Phifer Hall, which houses the University Of Alabama 's College Of Communication And Information Sciences . The building also houses commercial television station WVUA-7 and WUAL-FM 91.5, which is the Tuscaloosa station and base for Alabama Public Radio . Reese Phifer Hall is situated on University Boulevard, next door to the Office Of Student Media . |
