Information About

Vulgaria

As beautiful and ideal as Vulgaria seems at first, the chilling fact remains that no children can be found playing in its streets. Friendly townspeople express concern when they see the Potts children, and explain that children aren't allowed in their land. Why would an otherwise quaint and pleasant little monarchy outlaw the existence of children? Because the Baroness Bomburst despises the young creatures! The townspeople help the Potts by quickly hiding the children away ... away from the frightening Child Catcher played by Robert Helpmann .

Due to a rather embarrassing weakness for sweets and toys, the Potts children are lured out of hiding by the Child Catcher , who spirits them away to the castle. They find themselves trapped up in the tower, while the Toymaker takes Caractacus and Truly into the dark underground chamber where the townspeople hid all of Vulgaria's children from the clutches of the evil Baron and Baroness Bomburst. In addition to rescuing the Potts children, Caractacus Potts and Truly Scrumptious take it upon themselves to liberate Vulgaria from its child-hating rulers.

The castle used to portray Vulgaria in the film was Neuschwanstein (see photo).

NOTES

  • The term 'Vulgarians' was also used by Cambodians to refer to United Nations peacekeeping troops from Bulgaria who especially liked to flirt, and in some cases sexually harass, the local female population in Cambodia .

  • Another country named 'Vulgaria' is found in a Three Stooges short film. The Vulgarians shoot foreign photographers as spies; the Stooges are sent by a magazine to take pictures.
