The Town of Wheeler is in the northern part of the county.


HISTORY

The town was organized in 1820 from the Towns of Bath and Prattsburg .


GEOGRAPHY

According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 119.5 Km&2 (46.1 Mi&2 ). 119.4 km&2 (46.1 mi&2) of it is land and 0.1 km&2 (0.04 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 0.09% water.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 1,263 people, 437 households, and 335 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 10.6/km&2 (27.4/mi&2). There were 586 housing units at an average density of 4.9/km&2 (12.7/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 96.36% White , 1.27% African American , 0.32% Native American , 0.40% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.79% from Other Races , and 0.87% from two or more races. 1.66% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 437 households out of which 37.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.8% were Married Couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.3% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.87 and the average family size was 3.21.

In the town the population was spread out with 30.0% under the age of 18, 7.4% from 18 to 24, 27.6% from 25 to 44, 25.5% from 45 to 64, and 9.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 103.4 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.4 males.

The median income for a household in the town was $35,806, and the median income for a family was $37,632. Males had a median income of $27,137 versus $21,750 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $14,555. 17.9% of the population and 13.6% of families were below the Poverty Line . 28.4% of those under the age of 18 and 8.3% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.

The 1890 population was 1,084.
