CRITICISMS OF THE TEE SYSTEM

Arguments made by the Curriculum Council Of Western Australia for the introduction of WACE focus on the failings of the TEE system and the resulting advantages of the new.

The TEE system, it is claimed:
  • was designed in 1984 , and is thus without reference to modern technology or patterns in training

  • 'locks' students into pathways (university, TAFE or work) when they choose their Year 11 subjects in Year 10

  • has three different types of subjects (TEE, WSA (Wholly School Assessed) and VET) with inconsistent standards and different types of assessment

  • disadvantages TEE students who wish to attend TAFE (a 'B' in a hard TEE subject being worth less than an 'A' in a comparatively easy WSA subject)

  • locks students into levels of achievement in non-TEE subjects that may be below their ability.

  • is limited to 22 subjects while other states have 48 or more
