West Amwell Township is a Township located in Hunterdon County , New Jersey . As of the United States 2000 Census , the township had a total population of 2,383.

West Amwell Township was originally part of Amwell Township , which was formed in 1708 when Hunterdon County was still part of Burlington County . West Amwell split from East Amwell Township in 1846. The Delaware Native Americans had a path through the woods from Lambertville through Mount Airy, Ringoes and Reaville to Newark upon which the Old York Road was subsequently laid.


GEOGRAPHY

According to the United States Census Bureau , the township has a total area of 56.7 Km&2 (21.9 Mi&2 ). 56.3 km&2 (21.7 mi&2) of it is land and 0.5 km&2 (0.2 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 0.82% water.

West Amwell Township borders the City Of Lambertville , Delaware Township , and East Amwell Township . West Amwell Township also borders Hopewell Township in Mercer County .

The Delaware River separates West Amwell Township from the Commonwealth Of Pennsylvania .


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 2,383 people, 949 households, and 696 families residing in the township. The Population Density was 42.4/km&2 (109.7/mi&2). There were 984 housing units at an average density of 17.5/km&2 (45.3/mi&2). The racial makeup of the township was 98.07% White , 0.63% African American , 0.08% Native American , 0.71% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.04% from Other Races , and 0.46% from two or more races. 0.71% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 949 households out of which 29.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 65.3% were Married Couples living together, 5.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.6% were non-families. 21.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.51 and the average family size was 2.93.

In the township the population was spread out with 21.1% under the age of 18, 4.5% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 32.1% from 45 to 64, and 13.8% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 100.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.2 males.

The median income for a household in the township was $73,380, and the median income for a family was $79,605. Males had a median income of $49,539 versus $33,333 for females. The Per Capita Income for the township was $33,877. 1.6% of the population and 0.6% of families were below the Poverty Line . 0.0% of those under the age of 18 and 1.2% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.


GOVERNMENT

West Amwell Township uses the Township form of government which is one of the oldest forms of government in New Jersey. The governing body is a township committee of three members who are elected for three-year staggered terms in partisan elections from the Township at large.

The Township Committee annually chooses one of the Committee to serve as mayor for that year. The mayor presides at Township Committee meetings and votes as a member of the Committee, but has no other special powers under the township form of government law. All legislative and executive powers, including the power of appointments, are exercised by the committee as a whole.

Members of the West Amwell Township Committee are Mayor Nancy Palladino, Gary W. Bleacher and Thomas J. Molnar.

Federal, state and county representation

West Amwell Township is in the Twelfth Congressional District and is part of New Jersey's 23rd Legislative District.






EDUCATION

The West Amwell Township School serves students in grades kindergarten through grade six.

Students in grade 7 - 12 attend the South Hunterdon Regional High School in Lambertville, part of the South Hunterdon Regional High School District , which serves over 300 students in southern Hunterdon County. Students from Lambertville , Stockton and West Amwell Township attend South Hunterdon Regional High School.
