Welsh Highland Railway Locomotive Russell




  • 1906 ''Russell'' was built by the Hunslet Engine Company for the PBSSR , a railway that was never completed, and was 'loaned' to its sister company NWNGR , and named after the second receiver of that company.



  • 1923 ''Russell'' was cut down in order to fit through the restrictive tunnels of the Ffestiniog Railway , however this filed and ''Russell'' got stuck in one.


  • 1937 ''Russell' ran the last through train on the WHR, and was left in the sheds at Dinas


  • 1941 ''Russell'' was called up for war service, refurbished by the Brymbo Steel Works , and sent to the Hook Norton Ironstone Pits in Oxfordshire. Converted to a 0-6-2T after derailments


  • 1946 ''Russell'' was sold to Fayles Tramway, in the 'Isle of Purbeck' in Dorset


  • 1953 ''Russell'' Broke a driving axle, and was laid up


  • 1955 ''Russell'' was brought into preservation by the Birmingham Locomotive Club, and put on display at Tywyn Wharf station on the Talyllyn Railway


  • 1987 ''Russell'' Finally steams again, at the Gelerts Fam Works of the Welsh Highland Railway

  • 2005 ''Russell'' starts a full overhaul, to again run between Porthmadog and Dinas, on the completed Welsh Highland Railway



DESIGN


A 2-6-2T steam locomotive.

The design of Russell is based on the locomotives supplied to the Sierra Leone Railways.

Originally built with air train brakes, converted to vacuum train brakes following the linking of the Welsh Highland and Ffestiniog Railways. Fitted with air and vacuum brakes following restoration.
