HISTORY Wellston, founded in 1873 , was named for '''''Harvey Wells''''', a member of the Ohio Constitutional Convention. The city was incorporated in 1876 . GEOGRAPHY Wellston is located at 39°7'11" North, 82°32'3" West (39.119693, -82.534139). According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 18.3 Km&2 (7.1 Mi&2 ). 18.1 km&2 (7.0 mi&2) of it is land and 0.2 km&2 (0.1 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 1.13% water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census of 2000, there were 6,078 people, 2,359 households, and 1,644 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 336.7/km&2 (872.4/mi&2). There were 2,615 housing units at an average density of 144.9/km&2 (375.3/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 98.08% White , 0.36% African American , 0.28% Native American , 0.16% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.21% from Other Races , and 0.90% from two or more races. 0.61% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 2,359 households out of which 34.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.6% were Married Couples living together, 15.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.3% were non-families. 26.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.02. In the city the population was spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 26.8% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 88.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.8 males. The median income for a household in the city was $30,021, and the median income for a family was $34,488. Males had a median income of $28,514 versus $20,967 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $13,476. 18.8% of the population and 15.8% of families were below the Poverty Line . 24.7% of those under the age of 18 and 14.6% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
