Wells is a town located in Rutland County, Vermont . As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 1,121. GEOGRAPHY According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 60.5 Km&2 (23.4 Mi&2 ). 58.4 km&2 (22.5 mi&2) of it is land and 2.1 km&2 (0.8 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 3.42% water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 1,121 people, 466 households, and 334 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 19.2/km&2 (49.7/mi&2). There were 857 housing units at an average density of 14.7/km&2 (38.0/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 98.66% White , 0.36% African American , 0.09% Native American , 0.00% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.36% from Other Races , and 0.54% from two or more races. 0.98% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 466 households out of which 26.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.8% were Married Couples living together, 8.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.80. In the town the population was spread out with 22.2% under the age of 18, 5.7% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 28.4% from 45 to 64, and 18.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 95.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.5 males. The median income for a household in the town was $32,361, and the median income for a family was $41,023. Males had a median income of $30,921 versus $21,842 for females.
