The Web Cartoonist's Choice Awards (WCCA) is an annual event, since the summer of 2001, in which online Cartoonists nominate and select outstanding Webcomic s in a variety of categories. The WCCA represents a form of peer recognition since voting membership is open, only, to the sole creator, writer, artist (including colorists), or webmaster of an online webcomic. Winners receive an individualized web banner for their site. Because the membership is made up entirely of people with some sort of online presence, all official business is transacted over the Internet.

CONTROVERSY

Controversy over the procedure - and even necessity - of the awards has existed since the beginning. Many critics believe the WCCAs are nothing more than a popularity contest and the widely known comics such as '' Penny Arcade '', '' Megatokyo '' and '' PvP '' are always nominated and usually win. Some say the event gives little recognition to talented - but unknown - artists.

Looking at the statistics, however, shows that no comic has won an award all five years and only 5 comics have even received nominations each year.

The comic with the most awards are: '''' with 4 in 2001 and 4 in 2002. Then comes '' Penny Arcade '' with 2 awards in 2003 and 5 in 2004, '' Count Your Sheep '' with 6 awards in 2004, and '' Megatokyo '' with 4 in 2002 and 1 in 2003. '' PvP '' has the most nominations without a win--2 in 2001, 5 in 2003, and 3 in 2004--followed by '' Clan Of The Cats ''--3 in 2001, 2 in 2002, and 2 in 2003.

It has therefore been argued that the WCCAs increase interest in comics that voters may never have seen before. It also gives artists a chance to collectively praise the work of others, and encourages webcartoonists to participate as a community, and the WCCA staff continues trying to improve the awards with passing each year (such as adding more diverse categories, including one just for the year's newcomers).

2003

In 2003, the awards were presented differently: rather than post a list of winners, comics were invited to submit "introductions" and lead ins to each award presentation, an attempt to mirror the Oscars and Grammies. This practice was intended to become a regular feature every year afterwards, but planning problems in 2004 forced them to skip it. The feature returned in 2005 and is planned for 2006.
