CHEMICAL WEATHERING Acid rain Acid rain occurs when carbon dioxide dissolves in rainwater that then reacts with rocks. This dissolves the rock causing it to crumble or exfoliate. Acid rain causes features on statues and ornamental buildings to be worn away. PHYSICAL WEATHERING Freeze-thaw Water settles in cracks between bricks and rocks that form the building. Overnight or when the temperature falls below freezing point the water solidifies into ice, expanding and widening the crack. Over time, the crack becomes so big it causes fragments to fall off. Heating and Cooling In areas where there is a dramatic difference between the temperature in the day and in the night, building may exfoliate due to the sudden expansion and contraction. Minerals inside rocks also expand and contract in a similar way inside rocks. This also causes the builing to crumble over time. BIOLOGICAL WEATHERING Weed roots and moss Weeds that grow in the gutters. |
