Weather or '''dojo loaches''' (''Misgurnus anguillicaudatus'') are Freshwater bottom-dwelling scavengers, feeding mainly on Organic Material such as Algae . Weather Loaches are Omnivorous , so many also feed on Tubifex Worms and other small aquatic organisms. Popular in Aquariums , there are many varieties of weather loach, including ''Misgurnus fossilis'' - the European weather loach and ''Cobitis taenia'' - the spotted weather loach. They detect changes in barometric pressure (Hence the name "Weather Loach") and react with frantic swimming or standing on end. They can also survive small periods of not being in the water and produce a layer of mucus to keep themselves damp. They are also very hardy and can live in poor quality water. They have been known to attack very small fish in smaller aquariums. These fish will be more active the more space you give and spend a lot of time hiding or staying still. you should give them a place to stay which will have cover and shade. they will somtimes be more active after you have done a water change. Because of their appetite for snails, these loaches can help alleviate snail infestations in tropical fish tanks. SEE ALSO Loach EXTERNAL LINKS |
