is a charity organisation founded by British filmmakers
Bill Leeson and
David Wilson in
1993 , which particularly focusses on mental help for children in war situations. Shocked by the plight of children - this war, like so many in the world at the end of the 20th century, was a war against civilians - they decided to use their film and entertainment background to raise money for aid agencies operating in former Yugoslavia.
War Child consists of a group of independent organisations, working across the world to help children affected by war. War Child was founded upon a fundamental goal: to advance the cause of peace through investing hope in the lives of children caught up in the horrors of war. War Child has been active in over twenty war zones around the globe.
War Child consists of three implementing offices: War Child Canada, War Child Netherlands and War Child UK. These offices operate as equal partners, share the same aims and goals, but are totally autonomous, with independent trustees and financial coordination.
The offices have developed different focus and specialties, and often work closely together in countries where they each have projects. The UK office is focussing on child rights and child protection programmes aimed at the most vulnerable children, War Child Netherlands is focussed on psycho-social aid and War Child Canada on vocational training. Community peacebuilding and skills development are an integral part of War Child field projects.
Typical examples of projects funded and carried out by War Child are psycho-social workshops, music therapy for traumatised children, Human Rights programs for refugees and sports programs.

War Child Netherlands is the largest War Child Office with a yearly budget of around 7,5 million euro, which has specialised in helping the psychosocial needs of children who have suffered from war and/or conflict situations, by means of a
special methology by using creative arts . Today, War Child Netherlands employs around 450 field staff. With support from the Head Office in Amsterdam, War Child Netherlands reaches around 500,000 children per year in
12 countries affected by armed conflict .
War Child Netherlands invests in the peaceful future of children affected by war. War Child’s goal is the empowerment of children in war-affected areas, through:
- The establishment and implementation of psychosocial programmes in which creative and sports activities are used to reinforce the psychological and social development and the welfare of the children;
- The establishment and implementation of creative and sports programmes that are aimed at uniting children who have been driven apart because of war, in order to contribute to a peaceful society;
- The creation of public awareness of the problems of children in (former) war zones and the generation of support for these children.
Through music- creative- and sports activities children learn to express their emotions. This helps them to deal with war experiences and stimulates their personal development and respect for one another. By learning to play again children are able to escape the difficulties of their daily lives for a while.
