is a Sidescroller developed by Messhof using Game Maker .
Wally: Land of the Wallows is a puzzle platformer that is popular with the Game maker community due to its customizability. In its most basic form, it contains forty Levels which contain various objects and items. Wally also has an extended editor that allows the player to generate new wally levels using any of the objects featured in the main game. Furthermore, Wally contains a Command line, which makes extraneous Sprites or Sounds accessible.
The main game of Wally consists of forty levels that, for the most part, advance in difficulty. Preceding each level, a screen is displayed that occasionally explains plot details, but for the most part displays Non Sequitur comments. The main character's name is Wally.
The levels of Wally have various components which create a puzzle environment. While such objects are usually placed with respect to each other that enhance the gameplay, occasionally there are levels that have objects placed at inaccessible regions. There are three principle types of objects:
Obtainable objects, such as keys, red balloons, and extra lives can be obtained by the player, whereby they disappear from the screen. Below is a listing of them:
- Keys - These come in five different colors, and are used to open locked doors.
- Extra lives - Each one allows the player to die an extra time without reaching Game Over .
- Red balloons - These are not directly beneficial to the game, but there is a prize for obtaining all of them at the end.
- Fireflies - When all of these are accumulated in a level, a firefly door opens.
Static structures are objects that never change their Behavior . Below is a listing of them:
- Solid white block - A basic structure that acts as a Wall or a Boundary for parts of the level.
- Solid red pipe - The same as the solid white block above, except that it has a different color.
- Spring - When wally touches the top of one of these, he bounces higher and higher.
- Spikes - When wally touches one of these, he dies.
- Water fountain - These squirt out water above them. When Wally gets in the range of their spray, he is jettisoned to the top of the fountain's range.
- Unlocked goal - When wally enters one of these, the player beats the level.
- Wally spawn point - These can only be seen via the editor; they show where wally will begin the level.
- Pass through block - Wally can stand on these blocks as well as jump up through them.
Dynamic structures are structures that change their behavior depending on wally and other objects. Below is a listing of them:
- Yellow balloon - When wally stands on one of these, after one second, it disappears, and reappears in two seconds.
- Destructo switch - when this is touched by wally or a ball, all destructo blocks on screen disappear.
- Destructo block - Acts as a solid white block unless a destructo switch is "flipped", in which case it disappears.
- Flip switch - The directions of right- and left-pass through blocks are switched.
- Right- and left-pass through blocks - Wally can only move through these in the direction they are pointing.
- Firefly door - Acts as a solid white block until all fireflies are collected, whereby it disappears.
- Checkpoint - When this is touched by wally, the sprite is changed so that it is holding a flag. Only one checkpoint can hold a flag at a time. The one that does will become the spawn point when wally dies in the level.
- Ball crane - This lowers a net that goes through empty space, balloons, obtainable objects, and pass through blocks. If it reaches a ball, it will "pick it up", and when the net reaches the top of the crane, the ball will fall out.
- Purple/Blue/Green/Red door blocks - These are solid until wally touches them from the left or right with the appropriate key. Then they can be moved through. Unlike other "disappearing" objects, they retain a sprite and can be stood upon after unlocking.
- Small green balloon - These move upwards at a steady pace. When they reach the top of the screen, they reappear at the bottom of the screen. Wally can stand on them and use them as an elevator.
- Large green balloon - similar to the small green balloon, except they move slower and are twice as large.
- Ball - This can be stood upon by wally, who can also roll it over spikes and across water fountains. They can also "flip" switches.
- Locked door - When wally touches this with a yellow key, it becomes an unlocked door. Otherwise, it is part of the background.
- Icy moving platform - This platform moves left and can bounce off solid objects to move in the opposite direction. When wally stands on one of these, he does not move with it, but it "slips" out from underneath him.
Wally: Land of the Wallows features a command line that gives it many features the game alone does not have.
are a collection of sprites that replace the default ones of Wally.
Wally: Land of the wallows has an editor that allows new levels to be created.
The in-game editor can be accessed via the main menu by selecting the New Game option. The player must first make a name for the game. Then, he can toggle different objects with the A and S keys and choose to place them with the Z key or erase them with the X key.
Wally: Land of the Wallows saves its created games as .txt documents. Because each object is coded to a single letter, these text files can be edited outside of the game.
