Volvulus

  ICD10 K562
  ICD9 ,

A volvulus is a loop of bowel that has twisted on itself, possibly resulting in loss of blood flow to part or all of the intestines ( Strangulation ). This can result in the death ( Necrosis , Gangrene ) of the blood starved ( Ischemic ) tissue and requires immediate surgical intervention ( Jejunectomy , Ileostomy , Colostomy , Bowel Resection ).

Volvulus is more common in children than adults, and is the second-leading cause of Short Bowel Syndrome (following Crohn's Disease ).

Sigmoid volvulus is the most-common form of volvulus of the gastrointestinal tract and is responsible for 8% of all intestinal obstructions. Sigmoid volvulus is particularly common in elderly persons and constipated patient. Patients experience abdominal pain, distension, and absolute constipation.
