The 3rd Fleet was initially formed on March 15 , 1943 under the command of Admiral William F. Halsey , and served in the Pacific Ocean Areas during World War II . The fleet was put into reserve on October 7 , 1945 . It was reactivated February 1 , 1973 at Ford Island in Pearl Harbor as part of a Pacific Fleet reorganization. 3rd Fleet integrated the duties of U.S. 1st Fleet and Anti-Submarine Warfare Force Pacific ( ASWFORPAC ).
