Roman Catholicism In Algeria




The country is divided into four dioceses including one archdiocese. When Algeria was a French colony, there were over one million Catholics in the country, but most of these left upon independence. In recent years, there has been a rise of Islamic fundamentalism in the country and Catholics have been subjected to persecution, culminating in the 1996 murder of a Pierre Claverie , bishop of Oran {Link without Title} There are now only around 3,000 Catholics left in the country.
