A considerable portion of the population considers themselves Atheists , since several generations lived through the time of suppession of religion in the Soviet Union . Still, a significant part of atheists associates themselves culturally with the Russian Orthodoxy.

Division into different religions takes place primarily along ethnic lines: majority of Russians are Orthodox, majority of people of Turkic descent are Muslim, Judaism is almost non-existent among non- Jews . Neopaganism is on the rise, especially among Finnic People and Slavic People .

Religious Persecution - The attempts of Hare Krishna sect of Hindus to construct their temple have been met with stiff opposition. The Russian government has flip-flopped on the issue of land allocation for Hare Krishna temple. The priest of Orthodox Church denigrated Hindu God Krishna in exceptionable terms calling him satanic.
