The programs have been released almost exclusively for Video Game Console s; to date, only one of the programs has been released for PC . While the PC software allows simple conversion of finished songs into MP3 format, the console versions require the console to be connected to a computer or audio recording equipment with cables that must be purchased separately. Each program is released with a Royalty Free license, allowing the user to distribute and sell any music composed using the program's pre-existing samples, requiring the user only to notify the program's publisher and display the program's logo on the released music.

The first program in the series was Music: Music Creation for the PlayStation, released for the Sony PlayStation in 1998 . It was followed by '''Music 2000''', released in 1999 for PlayStation and PC . A licensing deal with MTV resulted in '''Music 2000''' being released in North America under the title '''MTV Music Generator'''. The next program in the series was released in 2001 for the PlayStation 2 , under the title '''MTV Music Generator 2''' in both North America n and Europe an territories.

After the release of MTV Music Generator 2, Jester ended its business releationship with Codemasters and released the next title in the '''Music''' series itself in , created by developer MixMax . Both titles were released for the PlayStation 2 and Microsoft Xbox consoles. Jester has also released portable versions of its program for GameBoy Color and GameBoy Advance , both titled '''Pocket Music''', neither of which was released outside Europe.
