University or University College? See Also: Education in Sweden#University ''University colleges'' or ''högskola'' conduct important research, but their main operations are within undergraduate education. This includes the awarding of the Swedish version of the Bachelor's and Master's Degrees , as well as the corresponding Professional Degrees . Upon application to the Government and following recommendation by the Swedish National Agency For Higher Education , a university college may, however, be vested with a particular Academic Discipline (''vetenskapsområde''). This includes increased state funding for research (''fakultetsanslag'') as well as the right to offer postgraduate programmes in the specific field, including the awarding of PhD degrees. ''University'' qualities are not defined in law or ordinance, but have traditionally included the existence of at least four faculties, considerable undergraduate education as well as an important research activity and Quaternary Education . Lately, this has changed, as three university colleges were given the name of university in 1999 together with a fourth college in 2005 but lacking widely in scope of research and education. While the Swedish National Agency for Higher Education have expressed some concerns, the matter is a hot political topic and divisive lines mainly follow party blocks. UNIVERSITIES ''In order of presedence, based on their creation as universities.''
''Independent Institutions''
The Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences was formed during the Higher Education Reform of 1977, thus meriting a more prominent position amongst its peers. However, the SLU sorts under the Ministry Of Agriculture and is therefore traditionally placed last in the list. As independent institutions are not mentionned in the Higher Education Ordinance, they take no particular place in the university order of presedence. It is worth mentionning that the order of presedence does not correspond to academic ranking of the institutions, to which both Chalmers University of Technology and the Stockholm School of Economics bear excellent testimony. University West is relocating all its activities to Trollhättan. The process will be concluded by 2008. ACADEMIES OF THE ARTS ''The Academies of the Arts are university colleges awarding undergraduate degrees, but conduct research and development in the arts. Lacking an official order of presedence, the Academies are given in alphabetical order.''
The universities of Karlstad, Luleå and Örebro and the university college of Malmö have their own Music Academies. Five academies of great public recognition but without legal status of their own are found at Göteborg University, where the Faculty of Fine and Applied Arts is in charge of the Valand School of Fine Arts, the School of Design and Crafts, the School of Theatre and Opera, the School of Music and Musicology and the School of Photography and Film. Certain other universities and university colleges also offer individual courses and/or programmes within the Arts sector. MEDICAL SCHOOLS AND UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS Medical schools are found at six universities. Medical schools are often organized in the same faculties as nursing schools, physiotherapy and other health related professional training programmes.
Örebro University has no faculty of medicine of its own, but Örebro University Hospital is in the process of building a research and education structure. SEE ALSO
