Son of Mr. Jonathan Backhouse of Polam, Darlington Married to Juliet, the Daughter of Charles Fox of Trebah and his wife, Sarah. In 1845 he became a junior partner in the Backhouse Bank . In 1867 , he was elected M.P. for Darlington as a Liberal. He was re-elected in 1874 .He retired from parliament in 1880.
