Information About

Civil Death

A prominent example of civil death is the " Illegal Enemy Combatant " designation used by the United States government, which is sometimes argued to violate the Due Process rights of designated individuals. A second example of civil death on a wide scale is the use of Purges by the former Soviet Union under Joseph Stalin .

Many southern U.S. states disfranchise (deprive of suffrage) people convicted of a felony perpetually. This is alleged to target blacks as law enforcement have been disproportionately targeted against them. It can be said that these states perpetuate racism with this means circumventing the usual legal protections.

Historically outlawry, that is, declaring a person as an Outlaw , was a common form of civil death.
