Charles-Joseph-Eugene de Mazenod ( August_1 , 1782 in Aix-en-ProvenceMay_21 , 1861 in Marseille commonly known as '''Eugene de Mazenod''', or since his Canonization on 3 December 1995 , as '''Saint Eugene''' or '''Saint Charles-Joseph-Eugene de Mazenod''' was the founder of the Missionary Oblates Of Mary Immaculate and from 1837 on Bishop of Marseille , France . During his episcopacy he commissioned Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde , an ornate Neo-Byzantine Basilica on the south side of the old port of Marseille.
