People are subject to belief overkill because they try to deceive themselves into thinking that all their values point to the same conclusion. In Jervis' study, people lined up their beliefs about nuclear weapons to support the same conclusion. There is nothing unreasonable, however, in thinking that weapons tests pose a serious medical danger but should still be conducted in the interest of national security.
