The only disadvantage to the hardware audiometer for educational purposes is its cost. For this reason, Brigham Young University have been looking into using a 'virtual audiometer' where people can be trained to run hearing tests. The virtual audiometer cannot be used to test people's hearings but is a training device for future audiologists. An alternative to high cost hardware audiometers are software audiometers. These use a standard computer and can be run by anybody in their home to test their hearing. EXTERNAL LINKS
