The Academy was founded in 1985 in Trieste , Italy with an initial budget of US$20,000, which has risen to over US$2 million in 1995. The current membership stands at 125, consisting of Founding Fellows, Fellows and Foreign Fellows. There are 120 Fellows from 24 African countries, and 5 Foreign fellows from 4 countries outside Africa.
