The original "meaning" of the acronym was '' Americans Disabled for Accessible Public Transit ''. With its enlarged mission and scope it has become ''Americans Disabled For Attendant Programs Today'' but is almost entirely used as a word without regard for any underlying textual "definition", making it a sort of semi- Backronym . The organization had its inception during protests in Colorado concerning accessibility to public transportation but has since become concerned with all aspects of inclusion for people with disabilities.
