Zanesville is a city located in Muskingum County, Ohio . As of the 2000 census, the city had a total population of 25,586. It is the County Seat of Muskingum County .

Zanesville was settled in 1797 by Ebenezer Zane (who lent his name to the town) and his son in law, John McIntire. Novelist Zane Grey was a descendant of the Zane family and was born in Zanesville. The city was the State Capital of Ohio from 1810 to 1812 {Link without Title} .


GEOGRAPHY


Zanesville is located at 39°56'46" North, 82°0'44" West (39.946049, -82.012150), along the Muskingum River at its confluence with the Licking River .

According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has a total area of 29.8 Km&2 (11.5 Mi&2 ). 29.1 km&2 (11.2 mi&2) of it is land and 0.7 km&2 (0.3 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 2.26% water.


DEMOGRAPHICS

As of the Census of 2000, there were 25,586 people, 10,572 households, and 6,438 families residing in the city. The Population Density was 878.9/km&2 (2,276.8/mi&2). There were 11,662 housing units at an average density of 400.6/km&2 (1,037.8/mi&2). The racial makeup of the city was 85.48% White , 10.76% African American , 0.40% Native American , 0.23% Asian , 0.02% Pacific Islander , 0.42% from Other Races , and 2.70% from two or more races. 0.79% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 10,572 households out of which 30.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.5% were Married Couples living together, 18.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.1% were non-families. 33.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 2.99.

In the city the population was spread out with 26.8% under the age of 18, 9.5% from 18 to 24, 27.8% from 25 to 44, 20.5% from 45 to 64, and 15.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 85.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $26,642, and the median income for a family was $31,932. Males had a median income of $27,902 versus $20,142 for females. The Per Capita Income for the city was $15,192. 22.4% of the population and 19.3% of families were below the Poverty Line . 32.3% of those under the age of 18 and 14.8% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.


CLAIM TO FAME

A Y-shaped bridge (usually called the "Y-Bridge") spans the confluence of the Licking and Muskingum River s. It is currently the only bridge of its type in the world and has been built numerous times since the 1850's. When being given directions, visitors are often struck by the statement "Drive to the middle of the bridge and turn right."

It is also the only bridge in the United States that you can cross and still be on the same side of the river that you started on.
