The Town of Wilton is in the northeastern part of the county, northeast of Saratoga Springs, New York . US Route 9 and the Northway ( Interstate 87 ) cross the town. HISTORY The region, once called "Palmertown," was settled around 1764. The Town of Wilton was created in 1818 from the Town Of Northumberland . The Grant Cottage State Historic Site is located in Wilton, in an area known as Mount McGregor. This site is the place where Ulysses S. Grant died in 1885 . {Link without Title} GEOGRAPHY US Route 9 passes through the town. According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 93.2 Km&2 (36.0 Mi&2 ). 92.9 km&2 (35.9 mi&2) of it is land and 0.2 km&2 (0.1 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 0.25% water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 12,511 people, 4,550 households, and 3,494 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 134.6/km&2 (348.7/mi&2). There were 4,785 housing units at an average density of 51.5/km&2 (133.4/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.05% White , 0.96% African American , 0.14% Native American , 0.53% Asian , 0.06% Pacific Islander , 0.26% from Other Races , and 1.02% from two or more races. 1.14% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 4,550 households out of which 40.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.4% were Married Couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 23.2% were non-families. 17.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.10. In the town the population was spread out with 28.9% under the age of 18, 6.3% from 18 to 24, 31.4% from 25 to 44, 25.4% from 45 to 64, and 7.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 96.9 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.0 males. The median income for a household in the town was $53,971, and the median income for a family was $61,056. Males had a median income of $42,451 versus $29,609 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $22,391. 5.1% of the population and 3.4% of families were below the Poverty Line . 4.6% of those under the age of 18 and 6.9% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
