Uri Lupolianski




Uri Lupolianski (born 1951 ) is the current Mayor of Jerusalem . He is a member of the United Torah Judaism party and is the first Haredi Jew ish person to be elected to the position of mayor.

Lupolianski was elected a Jerusalem City Council member in 1989. He has held the positions of lead Deputy Mayor, Chairperson of the Planning and Building committee and was responsible for the Family Services and Community Portfolio. Additionally, he is a member of the National Building and Planning Committee and the Committee for the Development of Holy Places.

In 1976, he established Yad Sarah , an organization in memory of his grandmother that lends out medial equipment and supplies a variety of services to the sick, elderly and lonely. Today, Yad Sarah has some 6,000 volunteers working out of 96 branches nationwide, serving Jew s, Muslim s, Christian s and Druse alike.

For his work with Yad Sarah, Mr. Lupolianski has received numerous awards and prizes, including the Israel Prize ; the President's Volunteer Prize ; the Knesset Speaker's Award and the Kaplan Prize for Efficiency.

Born in Haifa , Mr. Lupolianski studied at the Yavne School in Haifa and afterwards at Yeshivat Hanegev . He served in the Israel Defense Forces and worked as a teacher in a religious school in Jerusalem before establishing Yad Sarah.

Lupolianski is married with 12 children.
