Information About

Universitat De Barcelona

HISTORY

It was founded in 1449 , by king Martin I Of Aragon , forced to move to Cervera in the 18th Century for some 150 years, and relocated to Barcelona again in the 19th Century .

The reason of this move was to reward the people of Cervera having supported Philip V Of Spain on the War Of Spanish Succession , whose citizens asked port rights for the city. Philip V of Spain denied them, but in exchange moved to Cervera the University of Barcelona.

It was the only University in Catalonia and the Balearic Islands until the segregation process, started on 1968 and ended on the 90's, that resulted in the creation of other Catalan public universities ( Universitat De Girona , Universitat De Lleida and Universitat Rovira I Virgili in Tarragona) and the University Of The Balearic Islands . On this date, also started an expansion that took it to enlarge the University (until then only in the reduced building of the University square) with the new campus of Diagonal, Sants, Bellvitge and Mundet, all of them located within the city of Barcelona.
