The main town and the site of its municipal council is the town of Tinglev.

Neighboring municipalities are Bov , Lundtoft , and Aabenraa to the east, Rødekro to the north, and Løgumkloster and Tønder to the west. Its southern border is shared with that of Germany .

The municipality was created in 1970 due to a ''kommunalreform'' ("Municipality Reform") that combined a number of existing parishes:
  • Bjolderup Parish

  • Burkal Parish

  • Bylderup Parish

  • Ravsted Parish

  • Tinglev Parish

  • Uge Parish


By January 1 , 2007 Tinglev municipality will cease to exist as the result of ''Kommunalreformen'' ("The Municipality Reform" Of 2007) . It will be merged with existing Bov , Lundtoft , Rødekro , and Aabenraa municipalities to form a new Aabenraa municipality. This will create a municipality with an area of 951 Km&2 and a total population of 60,151 (2005). The new municipality will belong to the new Region Syddanmark ("South Denmark Region").
