Thetford is a town located in Orange County, Vermont , in the Connecticut River Valley . As of the 2000 census, the town had a total population of 2,617. GEOGRAPHY According to the United States Census Bureau , the town has a total area of 114.4 Km&2 (44.2 Mi&2 ). 112.8 km&2 (43.6 mi&2) of it is land and 1.6 km&2 (0.6 mi&2) of it is water. The total area is 1.36% water. DEMOGRAPHICS As of the Census 2 of 2000, there were 2,617 people, 1,032 households, and 730 families residing in the town. The Population Density was 23.2/km&2 (60.1/mi&2). There were 1,193 housing units at an average density of 10.6/km&2 (27.4/mi&2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.44% White , 0.46% African American , 0.23% Native American , 0.57% Asian , 0.00% Pacific Islander , 0.19% from Other Races , and 1.11% from two or more races. 0.46% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 1,032 households out of which 36.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 59.4% were Married Couples living together, 7.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.2% were non-families. 23.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.00. In the town the population was spread out with 26.9% under the age of 18, 5.5% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 27.4% from 45 to 64, and 10.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 94.6 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.5 males. The median income for a household in the town was $48,333, and the median income for a family was $55,323. Males had a median income of $35,121 versus $29,839 for females. The Per Capita Income for the town was $22,870. 5.7% of the population and 4.0% of families were below the Poverty Line . 8.8% of those under the age of 18 and 6.9% of those 65 and older were living below the poverty line.
