It is now sometimes seen as a satire of Christians and Christian views on Judaism of its time. Elizabethan England saw the play as a demonisation of the Jewish faith. ''The Jew of Malta'' is considered to have been a major influence of William Shakespeare 's '' The Merchant Of Venice ''. SUMMARY The play tells the story of the Jewish merchant, Barabas and his quest for revenge on the governor of Malta , Ferneze, for the seizure of his assets. The play also contains a prologue in which the writer Machiavelli , much hated by Elizabethan England, introduces 'the tragedy of a Jew'. EXTERNAL LINKS
