At the start of the 20th century, in those towns it was the predominant language, and was the mother tongue to more than 90% of the population. By the end of the century, however, its use had dropped, being spoken by about a quarter of the population. Most Stadsfries studies have focused on determining either a Franconian ( Holland ic) or a Frisian origin.
