The Royal Welsh is one of the new large infantry regiments of the British Army . The regiment's formation was announced on 16 December 2004 by Geoff Hoon and General Sir Mike Jackson as part of the restructuring of the Infantry - it consists of two regular battalions, plus a TA battalion, and will be created through the merger of two single battalion regiments. The former regiments will form part of the battalion title (in brackets):

Upon formation, the Royal Welsh will have a battalion of Armoured Infantry and a battalion of Light Role Infantry . The regiment was formed on St. David's Day , 1 March 2006 . On formation, the 1st Battalion will be based as a resident light infantry battalion in Cyprus , while the 2nd Battalion will be an armoured infantry unit based at Tidworth. The regiment's cap badge will be a representation of the Prince Of Wales's Feathers , while the Hackle of the Royal Welch Fusiliers will be worn by all NCOs and Other Ranks. HM The Queen is the new regiment's Colonel-in-Chief .
