It offers a residential setting and is an international honors college of Utrecht University . Though it is of a relatively young age, the success of its sister college, University College Utrecht makes it an equally attractive school, offering immense opportunities for its students, atleast so it promises. As this page is heavily targeted by the Roosevelt Academy PR department this information is skewed. Graduating students should be aware of the fact that finding a master programme in the Netherlands can be difficult. Especially because of the limited courses offered. The student should also accept the fact that the master might take extra time, since (s)he might need to take up extra courses. Information provided by the Roosevelt Academy is in many cases incorrect, promising problemless entrance into masters to new students. In reality this is not the case. History In 1575 , William Of Orange was about to found the first university in The Netherlands , the choice was between the cities of Leiden and Middelburg , it became the University Of Leiden and Middelburg missed out. However, centuries later, Middelburg would still get its university in the form of the Roosevelt Academy as founder Professor Hans Adriaansens , unhappy with the undemanding and large scale climate of university education in the Netherlands, started developing the idea of a small scale and academically intensive undergraduate college in the Netherlands. This resulted in University College Utrecht in 1998 and in the Roosevelt Academy in 2004 . The Roosevelt Academy was officially founded on Februari the 1st 2004 and the first students enrolled in August after Queen Beatrix performed the official opening of the university. Admissions The academy takes in 200 students each academic year, whereof approximately two-thirds are Dutch and the remaining third come from a wide variety of countries. As of yet this quote is not reached, only around 130 students start each year. Students graduate with either an Utrecht University Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science honors degree and this degree will enable students to seek admission into Master degree programs in renowned universities world-wide. Graduates from its sister college, University College Utrecht , have been accepted in top schools around the world such as Harvard , Oxbridge and University Of California . Roosevelt Academy is by many outsiders seen as an "elitist" college for children of rich people, however, tuition is not higher than at any other university of the Netherlands. Academics Students in the college study a wide variety of courses spanning four different subject areas: Academic Core, Arts & Humanities, Social Sciences and the Sciences, thus giving students both the "breadth" and "depth" required in today's ever-changing world. Therefore, a student graduating with a BSc degree in addition to being a good scientist, will also be good at analytical skills. After three years of successful study at Roosevelt Academy students are awarded with an Utrecht University Honors BA or BSc degree. Students at Roosevelt Academy can take courses in the following fields: Rankings In 2005 , the influential magazine Elsevier ranked the Roosevelt Academy as 1st of liberal arts colleges in the Netherlands, its score was also higher than that of any regular university in the Netherlands. It should be noted however, that the ranking is highly subjective. Since students could vote how much they like the University and they are since the beginning told that the Roosevelt Academy is the best student. Utrecht University , of which Roosevelt Academy is part, has been ranked by the Academic Ranking Of World Universities , done by the Shanghai Jiao Tong University , as 6th of Europe and 41st of the world. Exchange Program During the second semester of their second year at RA or the first semester of their final year, students have the opportunity to take part in an international exchange program. This way students can study abroad for a semester while earning credits that will count towards their RA degree. Students can go to a wide variety of universities in for example California, Canada or Oman Notable Faculty Notable faculty of Roosevelt Academy include the following:
Campus Academic Buildings Roosevelt Academy's academic centre is situated on the market square in the heart of Middelburg . This includes the medieval City Hall which is Roosevelt Academy's main building -- the non-gothic part is known as the Franklin building; Theodore Building, often referred to by students as ''the Helm'', which is next to the city hall and the Eleanor building (formerly known as Stadhuisstraat building). It is in these buildings that all classrooms, computer labs, faculty offices and the administration are located. Residentual Campuses Almost all students live at one of the residential campuses: the ''Bagijnhof'' and the ''Roggeveenhof''. These campuses all house 100-200 students each and are spread throughout the inner city, all close to Roosevelt Academy's academic buildings. The Bagijnhof consists of student houses with room for 10 to 16 students each. In the Roggeveenhof, students have their own apartment with a kitchen and shower. As the Roosevelt Academy grows, more buildings in the city center are being refurbished for student housing. All student housing is provided by Woongoed Middelburg , a private real estate company despised by students for its ignorance and lack of service. Library and Bookstore Roosevelt Academy's official academic bookstore is ''De Drvkkery'', located at the market square. Its official library is the ''Library of Zeeland'', the biggest library in the province. Student Organizations RASA The Roosevelt Academy Student Association or RASA officially represents the non-academic life of its members. RASA plays a central role in campus life. It has its own bar, and organizes a wide variety of things, from parties and sports to religious practises and philosophy meetings. Although these involve only a relatively small group of students. The ''Tabula Rasa'' is Roosevelt Academy's student magazine and is published by RASA four times a year. AAC The Academic Affairs Council (AAC) represents the students in academic matters. It engages in dialogue with fellow students and faculty to deal with complaints, wishes and suggestions concerning, among other things, the offered courses. Fraternities Some fraternities and a sorority exist at Roosevelt Academy. Traditions Traditions at the Roosevelt Academy include the ''Opening of the Academic Year'' held every year in Middelburg's New Church and the ''Dies Natalis'', the annual celebration of the founding of the college. Athletics The RASA Sports Committee organizes various sport activities for the students. Roosevelt Academy currently has a men and lady's rowing crew and students practise fieldhockey, soccer and basketball together. Unfortunately little is organised in Middelburg. Students have to go to Vlissingen for most sport activities, which are organised by the HZ. Costs Currently, the school charges the same fees for Dutch, EU and non EU students. They are the same as in every other university in the Netherlands: €1,496 (RASA contribution not included, which is €50,-). Campus housing costs are about 300+ euro a month, this includes internet, electricity, water etc. All costs included, studying one year at Roosevelt Academy will cost a student about 8,000 euro. In exceptional cases Roosevelt Academy gives scholarships, mainly to students from Eastern Europe and Southern America. External links ;Roosevelt Academy
