Rapid Action Battalion or '''RAB''' is an elite anti-crime and anti-terrorism force in Bangladesh . It is under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of Bangladesh . RAB was formed on 26 March , 2004 . It started its operation from 14 April , 2004 . Initially, it consisted of members of Bangladesh Army , Bangladesh Navy , Bangladesh Air Force and the Police. Since its initiation, RAB has participated in anti-crime drives throughout the country. Its Commando forces have been able to arrest several notorious criminals and terrorists. However, RAB has also come under criticism for human rights violations since a large number of the criminals arrested by RAB have died in cross-fires and ambushes, allegedly by their accomplices. Many human rights organizations claim that these are extra-judicial executions, while RAB has denied the allegation. Amnesty International critisised the RAB's lack of accountancy {Link without Title} . The initial success in catching the criminals has made RAB very popular among the people of Bangladesh. Extra judicial killings by the force numbers between 150 and 200 as of December 2005 as the government admits the lower figure and human right organizations support the higher. However, there is a popular consenscious that most of those killed are known criminals though is 2004 the RAB drew flak from the opposition parties after it killed an important witness of the murder of an opposition MP. ORIGIN RAB (Rapid Action Battalion Forces) was formed on 26 March 2004 . It started its operation on 14 April 2004. Initially, it consisted of members of Bangladesh Army , Bangladesh Navy , Bangladesh Air Force and the Police. Since its initiation, RAB has participated in anti-crime drives throughout the country. Its commando forces have been able to arrest several notorious criminals and terrorists. OBJECTIVE RAB was formed with the objective of catching notorious criminals. However, most recently, RAB has adopted “Fight against Terrorism” as its mission. However, the official mission statement is “Prevent crime and apprehend criminals”. MOTTO OF THE FORCE Motto of Rapid Action Battalion Forces is “Bangladesh is My Pride”. CAPABILITIES OF THE RAB FORCES The capabilities of RAB forces are: # Internal security duties. # Recovery of unauthorized arms, ammunitions, explosives and such other articles. # Apprehension of armed gangs of criminals. # Assisting other law enforcing agencies for maintaining law and order. # Intelligence gathering in respect of crimes and criminal activities. # Investigation of any offence on the direction of the government. # Such other duties as the government may, from time to time, assign. AREA OF RESPONSIBILITIES RAB-1, Dhaka Operational areas: Uttara , Airport, Turag , Gulshan , Khilkhet , Badda , Tejgaon Thana areas. (10 Wards of 07 Thana in DMP) RAB-2, Dhaka Operational areas: Lalbag , Kamrangirchar , Hazaribag , Dhanmondi , New Market , Mohammadpur , Keraniganj & Adabor Thana ( 21 Wards of 07 Thana in DMP & 01 Thana of Dhaka district) RAB-3, Dhaka Operational areas: Ramna , Khilgaon , Sabujbag , Motijheel , Paltan Thana & Araihazar , Shonargaon & Rupganj thana of Narayanganj district. ( 20 Wards of 05 thana in DMP & 03 thana in Narayanganj district) RAB-4, Dhaka Operational areas: Pallabi , Mirpur , Shah Alibag , Cantonment , Kafrul & Savar thana (15 Wards of 05 thana in DMP & 01 thana in Dhaka district) RAB-5, Rajshahi Operational areas: Rajshahi Division (16 Districts) RAB-6, Khulna Operational areas: Khulna Division, Gopalganj & Rajbari district (12 districts) RAB-7,Chittagong Operational areas: Chittagong Division ( Except Brahmanbaria ) ( 10 districts) RAB-8, Barisal Operational areas: Barisal Division area & Dohar , Nobabganj & Dhamrai thana ( Dhaka district), Faridpur , Sariatpur , Madaripur , Munshiganj & Manikganj district (11 districts) RAB-9, Sylhet Operational areas: Sylhet Division & Brahmanbaria , Narsingdi , Kishorganj , Netrokona , Mymenshing , Gazipur , Tangail , Jamalpur & Sherpur district (13 dristricts) RAB-10, Central Dhaka Operational areas: Demra , Sutrapur , Syampur , Kotoali thana & Sador , Bondor , Fotulla & Shiddirganj thana of Narayanganj district (24 Wards of 04 thana in DMP & 04 thana of Narayanganj district) MAJOR SUCCESS RABs first arrest was that of Pichi Hannan , a top terror of Dhaka, the capital of the nation. By catching him weeks after their creation, RAB created a very good first impression among the nation's citizens. It has also arrested several listed criminals so far.However, its greatest success is definitely in curbing a terrorist organization called JMB and capturing its leaders, Islamic militants Abdur Rahman & Bangla Bhai in March 2006 .
