Information About

Rampart Street

Today, Rampart Street has become one of the city's most known streets, after Bourbon, Canal, and St. Charles. It features ornate lightposts and established plantings on the Neutral Ground . These streetlights were some of the only working lights in the city during the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina , as they ran on backup power in case of electrical failure. One of the most famous landmarks on the street is the St. Louis Cemetery #1, which is one of the oldest cemeteries in the country and the oldest in New Orleans.

Another famous landmark there is Louis Armstrong park, the site of Congo Square, which allegedly gave birth to proto-jazz when slaves would meet outside the French ramparts to play whatever instruments and utensils were available to them.
